Family Outing - Tyler, Vanessa, Abby and Cameron

February 20th, 2009

Remember our Family Outing Series? Well Nature For Kids is happy to present the outdoor adventures of Abby and Cameron from Utah! Their mom, Vanessa, is an extremely creative and informative blogger at “I Never Grew Up”.  And Thier dad, Tyler, runs Dog Behavior Online and CommuniCanine, a dog behavior and training website. Enjoy the simple advice and great pictures they’ve chosen to share with us today.

1. What is your favorite family outing activity? Why?

We tend to do simple things in nature, for example: butterfly catching, reading under the trees, watching the clouds, jumping in leaves, nature scavenger hunts, walks in the mountains, etc. I think that when we have the best time is when we go on a quick fishing trip. There is something about fishing that is so relaxing and peaceful.

2. How has recreating in the outdoors benefited you and your children?

It brings a different tone home when we have spent a good amount of time outside. We are happier, calmer, healthier and rest much better. We lead a pretty intense work life so taking time every single day to spend time in nature helps us focus and connect with each other. My children have almost night and day personalities depending on if they have spend time outside or not. When they have they tend to be calmer which leads to them listening and obeying rules. When they have not had time to relax and have fun in nature they are much more…intense :)

3. What outdoor destination would you recommend other families to visit?

One of my fondest memories growing up was visiting Yellowstone National Park, my favorite part was the hot pools. We are lucky to live near the mountains and love to take a simple hike and learn more about the trees and animals we see. We also really enjoy living near the Jordan River Parkway and wonderful State Parks.

4. What advise would you give others when it comes to recreating outdoors as a family?

Spending time outdoors does not need to be a huge ordeal or another stressful thing to add to your list. Lots of time, spending time in nature means free entertainment with no planning! We do such simple things out in nature and don’t have unreal expectations.

5. What is something new you’d like to try as a family in the outdoors?

I would love to travel to different parts of our state (Utah) this year to explore nature in other areas. I still have a one and two year old so am still limited to what we can do. But even with really little ones you still have endless possibilities out in Nature. I am also on the search for fun summer nature trips to take with two little ones.

Nature For Kids would like to thank Vanessa, Abby and Cameron for sharing their outdoor experiences with us. The next Family Outing series is coming soon so stay tuned!
