Kids should be encouraged to take risks - try new things. It is the job and responsibility of parents to provide the kids with the safest possible environment in which to take these risks to try new things.

Thanks for having the courage to spread this message. When we think of our own childhoods, dangerous moments account for some of our most cherished memories and most powerful lessons learned. That can mean scrapes and bruises and sometimes broken bones, but without those things life wouldn’t be quite so vibrant.

Hmm, I liked this. I always think of myself as overprotective but I would do and do…do these things. Hammer and nails and a drill to the baby, pocket knife to the big boy…..and fire for the girls on every camping trip. They have thrown spears but I am feeling the urge to own one now.

I agree! I have let my kids do many of these things, Conrad was watching with me- and his eyes were as big as saucers when it came to the knives and spears. I have let him use a knife (very supervised, of course) but we are headed to the garage to make some sort of a spear to launch when Meg get home! I agree- we keep our kids so sheltered and protected from everything- that it probably does them more damage than good! Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for sharing this — I really enjoyed it! My grandfather embraced this idea, giving my dad a hammer, nails & a wood block when he was about 5. Plenty of bruises came from my dad’s adventures, but I think it made him feel like he could do anything.
