I really can relate to the anxiety you feel when your kids are near water. I too was a life guard as a young adult and love the water and want to pass that love on to my kids but I also have like you said "something that pulls at my insides screaming". I make sense of it when I compare it to guns. They are dangerous but if you learn how to use them correctly and gain more knowledge about them, the chances of an accident happening are minimized. I'd rather teach my kids appropriate actions around water and accompany them to settings with water then not let them ever come close to water. It takes patience and total alertness but I think it will get easier on us parents as the kids get older.

Swimming, it's a classic passtime. Generations upon generations have enjoyed. Why, then, am I terrified of my little ones near water? Don't get me wrong, my kids have swimmed, and the first time my daughter fell in to the pool I (relatively) calmly jumped in and pulled her out. I want my kids to play in streams, and romp in the lakes, rivers, and oceans while we are outdoors. But there is always something that pulls at my insides screaming for me to rush in there, pull them back and tell them to never go near the water again. Does anyone else have these impulses? Just so you know, I am not scared of water in general, I was a Life Guard as a young adult, and I swim like a fish (as do most people in my family), and I have never even known of someone who has drown. What do you do to calm those jitters when your kids are in the water?

This summer we had the opportunity to go boating several times (in a ski boat on a reservoir). It was great fun for my husband and I and our three kids. We let the kids do the knee board with dad and also the tube, while we wakeboarded. What other types of things would make the experience more fun for our kids? What kind of equipment is out there to help kids learn to ski or do other things? Just curious. One day we would like to have our own boat....one day...sigh.
