It was Day 1 of the kids’ summer vacation and while playing soccer in the front yard they knocked three baby birds out of their nest with the ball.
They were nestlings, or baby birds without feathers, as opposed to fledglings which are baby birds with feathers.
My first thought was not to touch them. I had heard somewhere that if you touch them their mother won’t accept them back or take care of them, so I put gloves on. Later we found out that it’s a Myth. Birds have a very poor sense of smell. So it doesn’t matter if you touch them with bare hands or not.
Luckily Kaiser dog wasn’t outside with us or he would have played with them like his squeaky hedgehog and probably hurt the poor things. We were also lucky the ball didn’t harm the nest, so we just put the baby birds back in.
The whole time the mama robin was cheeping like crazy! I was afraid for my life for a second there. I thought she was going to peck my eyes out.
This time of year lots of baby birds, nestlings and fledglings, will be seen on the ground. Watch this video to get a clear idea of what to do in many different circumstances. Or you can call your local humane society or veterinarian. The national wildlife rehabilitator association also has great advice!

I checked on the birds this morning and they’re doing great! Mamma bird is sitting on top of them still and they poke their heads out every once in a while begging for food. It will be fun to see them with feathers!
